The Cape Town Marathon was first held in 2007. It attracts thousands of runners for the half marathon and full marathon distance every year.
Over the years the marathon has grown into a high-quality international event presenting Cape Town as a world class destination for major sporting events.
In 2020, the Cape Town Marathon event could not be carried out as planned due to the global pandemic. The organizer decided to offer the participants a Virtual Cape Town App Run instead.
The distances of 5km, 10km, half marathon and marathon were advertised as app run. A start time window of 4 hours (6am - 10am local time of the participants location) was defined in which participants worldwide could start the run with the Virtual Cape Town App on October 18, 2020.
With the Virtual Cape Town App Run, the original routes of the running distances could be run through the app virtually, supported by audio messages, no matter where in the world. The audio messages put the participants on the original routes in Cape Town and gave the runners the feeling of taking part the run in Cape Town.
